Sicko

Post by Sionnach Glic »

Well, I rented Michael Moore's new documentary, Sicko, out last night. Anyone else see it?
I knew US health care wasn't great, but geez that's a lot worse than I expected. Are things really that bad over there, or was it just exageration?

I'm going to repeat something you said, my emphasis added:

Now, do we think any hyperbole could be involved?

In truth, it CAN be that bad... but it isn't NECESSARILY that bad. I've got a PPO, and I pay $10 per visit; I have mail-order Rx service, for which I pay $9 for a ninety-day supply ($7 for generics) per scrip, and NOTHING at all for diabetic supplies, including insulin. I require no referrals to see specialists, and in-network procedures are covered 100% - 80% or 75% for out-of-network.

Moore isn't a great source but, in truth, the health care system in the US is very poor. Its been a hotbed issue for many years but as long as the lower class is concerned, they shouldn't hold their breath for it. Only the upper and middle class can afford it and if you can't afford it you have to be a criminal or illegal immagrent to get free care. The lower class is just out of luck with the matter. Its said over all that its only a small problem since that is only 15% or 45,000,000 of the country's population. There are also larger problems at hand such as, how to cut school funding without letting people know, or how to write off a war and blacklist all of the missing money so that no one notices it.

It depends a bit on where you live, too. Some states care more than others. Here in Oregon, it's fairly easy to find assisted health care if you're poor. Thank heavens, because I haven't got any insurance at all, and I'm a self-employed artist, so I'm not exactly rolling in the dough.

Sounds a lot like Uzumi and myself. Texas ain't the best state for indigent health care.

NJ offers quite a bit too, although it seems that the requirements go above and beyond the call of poverty.

Well, I don't have the equivalent of full coverage, if I needed anything major, I'd be in trouble, but I'm on three different daily medications (yikes!) which I get assistance with, both for doctor's check-ups and for the meds themselves. That seems to be fairly standard in this area. I haven't looked anywhere else, so I don't know.

Never believe anything Michael Moore says at face value. He is a spin master if there ever was one. Go for about... 60%-70% of the spin he puts on it.

Yeah, I know. He just managed to convince me that time, for some strange reason. Which is odd, as I'm usualy quite skeptical when it comes to his stuff.
