Yep, and according to Marshall and Sanow's statistics, .22LR is the most effective caliber as far as one-shot stops. Are you going to replace your 9mm Para with a .22 rim pistol now? I didn't think so. Spines are very narrow targets, especially in a high-threat (read: "high adrenaline") situation; counting on a one-shot stop - whether you are using .22LR, .380ACP, 9mm, .45ACP, .50AE, or .600 Nitro - is a fool's errand and one that is likely to help the user acheive room temperature pretty quickly.

In other news, my pup isn't doing so well. He's been bandaged up with a tumor a/o infection on one toe, but it's been affecting his mood and cognition. We've tried more regular tranquilizers, and even gone to Xanax with his regular Prozac, but things don't look well. He still gets aggressive (a trait which was never part of his personality,) disoriented, and scared. Plus, in addition to the toe, his senses seem to be diminishing and he doesn't have the physical capacities that he once had. At today's vet appointment, I'm afraid I might have to discuss the option of euthanasia.

Thanks, bro. One way or another, they will. Either he gets better, or he finds doggie Valhalla where there are fields full of tennis balls and slow rabbits. I can tell that he feels awful about what's happening to his personality, and as much as I love hearing that tail beat a street beat on the floor when I come down in the morning, I think it's time to start facing up to the difference between what I want and what's least miserable for him.

A hard decision, naturally. My dad had a dog, and it was damned painful when she had to be put to sleep.

Best wishes Mikey. We didn't have pets at home for the first half of my now 30 years so I've yet to go through the loss of one.

I know its a wee bit late but best wishes. A pain I am not looking forward to.

So sorry to hear, Mikey. I understand what you're going through, I had to help a friend of mine put down his dog several years ago. Even though he wasn't my dog, I still cried over him.

Well, we ended up taking my dog to be euthanized today. His digital tumor would have required the removal of part of his forepaw, and would likely have metastasized to other toes and then into his chest. Further, the recovery would have required him to be doped up almost to the level of a thorazine patient... as it was, he was on Prozac, Xanax, and a sedative called acepromazine, and still having disorganized psychotic fits. He had a triple dose of the sedative before we left the house this morning, and still (to the vet staff's amazement) walked in under his own power.

It's funny sometimes how knowing that your decision was the right one doesn't make it any easier to make.

Right decisions are normally the hardest. Its why so few people can make them and have to carry the weight of it.

I'm sorry for your loss. I just lost my dog Sandy, she died in my arms and not in the comfort of the vet office.
