Well that episode where commands an alien hospital ship was OK. Mostly for the lulz of watching an Ensign lecture Janeway that he was being misused and should be a Lt. or Lt. Cmdr.

That may just be the greatest thing I've read today.

Completely agreed. I think the basic premise could have produced an awesome series, but it would have taken some creativity and balls on the part of the writers.

I am seriously wondering how keeping a cast member around based on some stupid dumbass poll that had nothing to do with anything improves the quality of the show. They were actually developing Kes as a character. They would have had to deal with her getting old and dying. What the hell were they doing with Harry? Not promoting him, not giving him a love interest, not giving him some nookie, not letting Garrett Wang direct an episode.
Well in all fairness, you can't really promote a guy if there aren't any slots for him to be promoted into. Yeah I could see giving him his Jg pip, but he wouldn't be doing anything different.

Everything else, yeah, that was crap.

They already HAD him doing a job they should have had at least a full lieutenant doing. After all, the Operations Officer is quite important. Hell, Data had the exact same job on the E-D, and he was the ships 3rd in command.

It's most telling because this is obviosuly why they think people watch the show. B&B clearly believe that people watch Trek purely because it has beautiful people in it. So Wang voted as a beautiful person means he can't be fired.

One only has to look at the hiring of Jeri Ryan. They hired one of the most gorgeous women around and stuck her in an outfit that was frankly absurd, because that's what they think will draw the viewers. It was probably pure accident that the woman also happened to be capable of acting everybody else in the show right off the screen (except for Picardo), and ended up being one of the most interesting characters, too.

And what? Promoting the guy is just a band-aid solution to the problem that there isn't anything else for the guy to do. What other responsibilities is the guy going to get? What prospects are there for him?

The answer of course is nothing. The guy hasn't a hope in hell of advancing unless they get home or through attrition. That's the result of being stuck 70 years from home and none of the senior officers dying.

I could have lived with the catsuit if they'd put her in a regular uniform in a few episodes, either over the catsuit or in place of it. Keeping her in it for four seasons was just blatantly low brow. I loved the character but I hate how anytime she developed even a little bit they had something Borg malfunction and reset her.

Indeed, they never even attempted to rationalize the catsuit. I mean, I found her as easy on the eyes as anyone; but why did they even have a suit like that? It certainly wasn't a remnant from her time as a Borg, and there's no evidence of those being GI for any particular reason.

It was because her skin was blah blah blah. Apparently her skin was screwed up by the borgification and needed protection. I think later on it was explained as just a habit for her.

Oh, right. Super-tight clothes for a skin condition. Yeah, that makes sense.

I vaguely recall they referred to it by some techno-name... "Dermal coating" or some damn thing, rather than just calling them clothes.

Of course we did see her skin once, and she does have normal Human-looking skin underneath it. So there's little justification for it being anything technobabblish.

Just to back up a bit.

Tom was knocked back down to Ensign after that trouble with that water planet-ish thing. I don't think his responsibilities changed that much, if at all. Then they brought him back up to Lt. later on.

Why not toss Kim a bone while they were at it? If rank didn't matter, why bother demoting Paris and then promoting him again?
