History
The NX class was a project by Earth to build a starship capable of travelling over long distances to explore interstellar space. For the most part, this was one of the most thought greatest designs of the United Nations Starfleet. The space frame ws sleek and asethetically pleasing, but also increased warp field efficiency. Sifting through the journal of Dr. Zefram Cochrane, he based the design off the Enterprise E which he saw through his telescope on the night of April 4, 2063. After his speech about his encounter with people from the future which was usually considered a story, he made a cover story his the design. Over the 56 years, Zefram Cochrane spearheaded the development of Warp Drive until he left on the Valiant to parts unknown. After Cochrane's disappearence, the project was headed by a young engineering major named Henry Archer (however, he didn't have a son named Jonathan Archer) who was placed in charge of the NX project. Over the next 40 years, several prototypes and classes of ship were built using technology produced from the NX project which was Sarfleet's pride and joy.
The spatial missiles were nuclear missiles modified for space combat, while the plasma cannons were a new technology built mainly for the NX class, but for later use on classes that were to be developed using NX technology. The Superconductive armor was also a recent innovation in starship defense. There were
On October 9, 2148; the NX-01 officially began construction. On March 5, 2150; The NX-01 Dauntless was launched from an orbital drydock facility under the command of Captain Erika Hernandez (I know I'm tying in reccuring Enterprise characters and one shot members). A.G. Robinson was given Columbia which was expected to be completed in 2152, a year after the Dauntless completed her shakedown. The course of the NX-01 took it planets such as Andoria, Tellar, Trill, Betazed, and many other planets. The Dauntless also visited many other notable planets like Risa, Xyrillia, Krios, Vissia, Mazar, Akaali, and Dakala. It also encountered ships from several powers like the Andorian Khumari, Tellarite Cruiser, Klingon Raptor, Stinger, D-4 BoP, D-5 Battlecruiser, and D-6 Battleship. It also encountered several stations. It's secondary mission was to leave subspace relays along its course to exxtend the range of subspace communications. In 2153, it made first contact with the Klingons at a deuterium refinery. THe contact went less than smooth, but wasn't hostile either. 2 weeks later, Columbia protected the NY-22 Commonwealth (Intrepid Class) from 2 Tandaran Cruiser that had ambushed it.
In July 2154, the Dauntless arrived back at Earth along with the Columbia, Challender, Discovery, and Atlantis. They was refitted with new technology and an increased armament including experimental photon torpedoes, an experimental shield system, thicker armor, and a tractor beam. It's first mission after the refit was to look for a missing Vulcan ship. In the area, the Dauntless was attacked by 2 unknown ships (which belonged to the Romulans, but they didn't know that. After fighting off the attackers, the Dauntless found the Vulcan ship hiding in a LIthium nebula created by several volcanic moons which orbited a gas giant 18 times the mass of Jupiter. After the mission, Captain Hernandez reported the incident to Starfleet. The species which the ships belonged to was later discovered to be the Romulans. In 2155, the Intrepid was destroyed by a small fleet of Romulan ships while patrolling the Bassen Rift. 5 months later the war started and lasters until 2160, when an fleet of Earth, Vulcan, Andorian, and Tellarite crippled the Romulan fleet at the Battle of Terra Nova. A treaty was created by the flagships of both Earth and the Romulans using text only communication. On August 12, 2161; the United Federation of Planets was formed and the NX class was decomissioned and recomissioned as the Dauntless Class with the new registry system being NCC-(insert number). The Dauntless class continued to be used by Starfleet until 2259 in which it was decomissioned. All of the ships were put into the Starfleet Muesem because of the class' fame. In 2245, the surviving NX captains witnessed the launch of the USS Constitution NCC-1700 and USS Enterprise NCC-1701 in 2245.

History
The Intrepid Class was a design fielded in the early 2140s to begin a fleet dedicated to the defense of Earth along with the Neptune while the NX Project was under way. It was designed mainly for swift strikes against powers who tried to attack Earth. While the Sarajevo Class was built as a transport ship to move people to the colonies (Vega, Terra Nova, and Alpha Centauri) and not provide defense, the Intrepid and Neptune Class ships were built for combat and defense making them great for colony defense. The Intrepid was launched on Febuary 13, 2145 alongside the Neptune. They were adequate defense against some attackers, however when the Dauntless completed its shakedown, the Intrepid Class recieved a refit bringing it to spec with the Dauntless class. After the founding of the United Earth on March 21, 2155; the Intrepid Class was built at a somewhat faster pace and a total of 38 more were built after this because of increased production due to thee destruction of the Commonwealth NY-22 the Romulans. Several of these ships were lost in the Earth-Romulan War including at the Battle of Charon when the Romulans were at Earth's doorstep near Pluto's moon Charon. 17 Intrepid Class ships battled a large Romulan fleet until reinforcements could arrive. The attack was repulsed by a large Human, Vulcan, Tellarite, and Andorian fleet that was waiting near Staurn for the Romulans. After the war, more were built to make up for the losses in the Earth-Romulan war. On June 15, 2165, the last Intrepid Class was completed. This ships continued to serve in Starfleet until April 24, 2247, when the last one ws decomissioned and put on the civilian market.

The Yorktown Class was built using alongside the Confederation, Poseidon, and Minuteman Classes to expand and diversify the Starfleet so it wouldn't be reliant on one class of ship. it was built using NX Refit technology and was classified as a battleship. It was a single purpose being that was a combat only vessel. The Yorkown NC-01 was completed on June 7, 2155 and comissioned a few months later. It was equipped with Uprated Plasma Cannons, Gamma Ray lasers, and Photon Torpedoes. After testing the Photon Torpedoes aboard the Dauntless Class, they were deemed ready for use on the new ship classes comissioned. The only problem with the torpedoes was that they weren't easy to produce so it took 7 months to find a way to mass produce them until the Andorians offered their help in mass producing photon torpedoes. Then producing production of photon torpedoes became easier to produce and found their way onto most starships. The Plasma Cannons were an uprated model superior to the Dauntless Class' Plasma Cannons due to the need for better weaponry in during the Earth-Romulan Cold War (which lasted only a few months until open warfare began several weeks later). When the Earth-Romulan War began on December 30, 2155, the only other completed Yorktown Class in service was the Missouri NC-02. During the war, more ships were produced however the war was practically a stalemate with neither power able to claim a decisive advantage over the other. The Yorktown Class fared very well in most battles. After the formation of the United Federation of Planets on August 12, 2161; the Yorktown Class continued production until another 2 years later when the U.S.S Phoenix NCC-77 was produced. The class continued to serve with distinction until 2263 when the U.S.S. Phoenix was decomissioned and placed on the civilian market. Nowadays, the Yorktowns are in civilian hands used as cargo ships mainly.

It's a battleship, it's obviously going to be bigger to accomadate more weapons, supplies, and crew. That was the point, Earth wanted a heavily armed ship designed for combat operations mainly (well only combat and related operations. The bigger size does have a reason.

History
The Poseidon Class was designed as another class of ship to increase the size of Starfleet in the 2150s using the new NX technology and the multiple newer drydocks. The Poseidon Class shares a similar history to to the Yorktown Class and Dauntless class. There really isn't much to be said about it anyways except on its design.
The Poseidon differed from the other Yorktown and Dauntless classes in that it didn't have an engineering section had a sensor pod attached by 2 rollbars. It's increased sensor range allowed to serve as a light cruiser and a scout during the Earth-Romulan War. After the war, this class became part of the UFP Starfleet.
