I was actually thinking of the scene from Life, the Universe, and Everything, in which Ford and Arthur are wondering how a Chesterfield sofa is able to appear and disappear, and carry them to an alternate timeline.

Ford: "Eddies in the time stream."

Arthur: "Is he, then?"
