I'm sorry, Mikey. He's in a big field, now. Lots of trees, lots of treats. And fire hydrants as far as the eye could see!

Thanks, guys, and I'm sorry, Deep. I sort of wish Simms had gone in his sleep at home, but at least he was in our arms also. Thankfully the vet's office allowed us to stay with him as he went. I know it was just a trick of physiology, but his lip was twitching after he had passed... I told my wife that, true to form, the old man was growling at Death.

What they use to put them to sleep doesn't kill quickly, in fact... he could have been dreaming. Its not unheard of and you can say you got to hold him to sleep one last time.

Hmm, Simms got two drugs. The first just put him under. The second was really a huge overdose of anesthesia and stopped his pulmonary function in under 30 seconds.

The brain doesn't shut down right away though. Two or even three minutes later the brain can still be fully active, just in sleep mode.

At least he's no longer suffering. That's the important thing. Still, I'm sorry for both your losses.

It's the way of life, but the pain reminds us of the reasons why we care. Good times never fade.

Well said. It wouldn't hurt if we didn't care.

The pain reminds us we're alive, for lack of a better term.

Of course you do - otherwise, you couldn't teach.

And score one for Mikey. :) In a good way, mind you. ;)

Well I don't anymore, couldn't afford it anymore. I went Federal again but such is life.

I was “brutally” and repeatedly attached by an elevator yesterday. The doors closed quite quickly as I was getting on and then kept bounce-pushing on me like it was trying to chew on me…

It was actually rather funny and the people on the elevator said my confused expression was priceless.
