This is just made-up. You're the one always going on about how much it costs to build a starship, and here we have one that has a non-standard warp core, the latest shipboard phaser technology, quantum torpedoes, ablative armor (which requires REPLACEMENT/ patching after every mission,)
My point was the station needed a ship. Stationing the Defiant there was the best use of resources they could do. It fit the roll perfectly.

Why place a Nova when you could just leave the Defiant where it is?

To start with Sisko pulled it out of mothballs where it was doing nothing. Then the area got dangerous and not only that but the crew knew how to use the ship. Removing it would have been a bad idea.

As I recall, the Defiant was intially sent to the station with the specific task of going through the wormhole to find the Founders. Once that was accomplished it was left there to provide a mobile weapons platform to support DS9 - remember this was before the station got its big weapons refit. Given that the threat apparently didn't rate a full battle group perminently stationed there, the Defiant was probably the next best thing.

The fact that the dominion proved so able to fight starfleets best ship of the time should have been the clue that the UFP was in massive need of a build up! It should have be a squadron of Defiants, not just one.

It's hard to deploy a squadron when all you've got is a failed protoype.

With the wormhole the only way to get into the system and the station and the defiant sitting right there they probably felt safe enough since open hostilities didnt happen right away.

A squadron of Defiants swooping in like the Whitestars in B5 would be cool.
