I always thought the aliens replaced the M/AM fuel for faster flight, and then the Equinox would revert to normal fuel when it ran out and needed to summon more.

Well, they were said to be giving off some sort of energy I think. And I know Ransom stated that it would take I think 63 more aliens to get home or something.
