Re: Question: Reuse of old ships
Case in point; the alien ship (can't recall the name) in that TNG episode (also can't remember the name) that had been sitting in an asteroid field for 1,000 years. The life support systems still functioned, and it didn't seem too bad off after a millenium of sitting in space. I don't think standard operations really stress the hull at all.

"Booby Trap". While there wouldn't be any mechanical stress, radiation would make the hull brittle over time.Tsukiyumi wrote:Case in point; the alien ship (can't recall the name) in that TNG episode (also can't remember the name) that had been sitting in an asteroid field for 1,000 years. True, but as an example, it shows that simply being in space doesn't cause a lot of stress, and hull lifetimes are certainly rather long.Captain Seafort wrote:"Booby Trap". While there wouldn't be any mechanical stress, radiation would make the hull brittle over time.

That may be due to the advanced nature of the metals rather than anything else.

Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

Re: Question: Reuse of old ships
The simpler explanation is that just the fact of being in space doesn't of itself cause material failure.

Indeed. We have no idea what the ship was composed of.

Space is a nasty place. High speed particles and radiation. Gravitational forces.

Hey, I like them obvious, I like the subtle, I like'em big, I like'em small, but I like my girlfriend's best of all. You were expecting me to say I like'em all right? Well I don't do what's expectedMikey wrote:It's little obvious, no?
