Hmm, I wonder if these space marines will be the fluff version or the "balanced," game version.

Re: Ultramarines: The Movie
Aye, if it came to a boarding action then there's nothing the IN could do but cower in fear.
It's true that Astartes vessels are rather more advanced than their IN counterparts. However, their ships generaly seem to be geared towards one thing and one thing only: planetary assaults. Their main armament is geared towards blasting the shit out of stuff on the ground, with thick armour and strong engines allowing them to just plow through blockades and unleash a horde of drop pods and landing craft before turning tail and getting the hell out of dodge before the enemy fleet regroups. When it comes to ship-to-ship combat, they're average at best. Not that this should be any surprise; it's not their job to get involved in space battles. That's what the Imperial Navy is for.

The Dark Angels seem to think otherwise...Sionnach Glic wrote:it's not their job to get involved in space battles. That's what the Imperial Navy is for.
*ahem* anyway, yes; I wasn't saying that a battle barge would take an IN battleship in a broadside-for-broadside fight every time. Rather, the sum of the assetts of a battle barge is probably greater than that of a battleship.
However, I will say that I think a battle barge is probably equipped enough to stay on station for a while.Sionnach Glic wrote:before turning tail and getting the hell out of dodge before the enemy fleet regroups
Chances are that they will be just fallible enough to allow for a dramatic wound or two.Tyyr wrote:Hmm, I wonder if these space marines will be the fluff version or the "balanced," game version.
*EDIT* Bear in mind that the Ultrasmurfs have the strongest plot shields of any chapter.

Oh, with that I agree entirely.Mikey wrote:*ahem* anyway, yes; I wasn't saying that a battle barge would take an IN battleship in a broadside-for-broadside fight every time. Rather, the sum of the assetts of a battle barge is probably greater than that of a battleship.
Aye, but not against a competant attack against them, and certainly not if the enemy has a battleship available. They've thick skins, but that's mostly all they've got going for them in combat. They're durable, but they lack the punch to go with it.Mikey wrote:However, I will say that I think a battle barge is probably equipped enough to stay on station for a while.

Re: Ultramarines: The Movie
I, in turn, agree entirely with the fact that Astartes ships aren't built for fleet battles; rather, they're built to soften up a LZ and put Marines on the ground.
In fact, in fluff the Grey Knights strike cruiser Rubicon (and the Malleus apparently makes sure that GK ships are ven better-built than "standard" SM ships) was ripped apart by an IN cruiser and two escorts. To be fair, though, the remaining half of the ship was still able to land its complement of 'Knights.

That's pretty much it. They're built to be able to survive long enough to land troops and to smash ground fortifications.

In BFG, SM fleets fair well when they run a boarding battle. Their ships lack the range and stopping power needed to go head to head with most fleets.

Aye, the Strike Cruiser wasn't fighting back either.Mikey wrote:I, in turn, agree entirely with the fact that Astartes ships aren't built for fleet battles; rather, they're built to soften up a LZ and put Marines on the ground.

Re: Ultramarines: The Movie
A renegade Inquisitor had convinced the local IN, IG, Arbites, etc. that they were expecting an attack by one of the Traitor Legions. Not knowing an actual Space Marine from their own asses, the locals of course believed that the incoming Grey Knights were the alleged Chaos Marines.Tyyr wrote:What book is this where the IN is shooting on GKs?

Nothing new on the site, either. If GW acts true to form, nobody will know anything about it until the day it's released.
