Re: Let's Equip Starfleet Security

Seafort's right. Fact is we've seen that while Phasers CAN do impressive damage. More often then not, they don't. KE weapons ARE effective in battle. Phasers are sometimes effective, sometimes not. So we made a choice between them. Bodyarmor is always helpful, even if only in small amounts its bett...

Re: Starfleet Command's Worst Decisions

The Defiant is also capable of taking on vessels many times its size, indicating that there's some seriously powerful weapons and generators built into it, comparable to much larger ships. The cost of not just building those, but also miniturising them enough to fit into such a small hull can't be ...

Re: Let's Equip Starfleet Security

Frankly I think that those who are saying go to conventional firearms are nuts. If you watch the traditional development of hand carried weaposn it is pretty clear what stage they are in in Trek. When there was a transition from bow and arrows to firearms initially people used both. Once firearms we...

Re: Starfleet Command's Worst Decisions

Not building Defiants in as large of numbers as possible as soon as the design was finished. Simply put it makes the most logical sense and it helps your exploration mission as you can release tons of longer legged ships to go out exploring if you have a solid core of defense ships back home. The D...

Re: the Federation Galaxy

The Dominion has a solid hold over the Gamma Quadrant and isn't far behind the UFP in terms of tech. It's quite likely that they will only continue to expand, leaving most of the GQ firmly in their control. I'd say that the Dominion outclasses the Feds technologically. They've got general-issue hum...

Re: the Federation Galaxy

Who's the say that that UFP will win? It's quite possible that they'll run into an empire that's a step further up on the tech ladder than they are. The Dominion has a solid hold over the Gamma Quadrant and isn't far behind the UFP in terms of tech. It's quite likely that they will only continue to...

Re: the Federation Galaxy

I would say yes and no. The way I see it the AQ is on its way to becoming a Federation dominated area where everyone else simply is too weak to matter any more. There will be some holdouts but they will matter less and less over time. I think that eventually some of the other powers will try to figh...

Re: Federation Fleet Composition

Does the UFP even have 30 GCSes? :? Well, assuming they have, that main core alone is more than enough to anhialate most enemy fleets. With the heavy-hitters already decided, the majority of the rest of the fleet would be smaller vessels. Scouts, patrol ships, destroyers to guard the flanks, etc. I...

Re: Let's Equip Starfleet Security

Well, we all agree with the need for SOF and/or assault forces. Would these fall under the aegis of "security," or be their own body? I think it has to fall under security. I think if they started re-writing the book on those two missions they have to stumble upon the obvious answer of Ma...

Re: Federation Fleet Composition

30 GCS (war refit) 70 Neb (war refit) 70 Akira Well thats 170 of the 500 there. Though its a pretty good heavy ship list. These ships would make a powerful pitbull style fleet. 100 Ambassador class ships. 100 Excelsior class ships (Lakota refit). 100 Steamrunner class ships. While the GCS/Neb/Akira...

Federation Fleet Composition

A hypothetical question for the board that I wanted to get some views on. In this scenario you are in command of Starfleet and are tasked with putting together a few major combat fleets from what you have on hand, lets say 5-10 years after the Dominion War. For reasons you are not privy to Prometheu...

Re: In the embers of the dominion war

Welcome! I'd like to think you're right, but V'Ger didn't push the UFP toward that posture; the whale probe didn't; the Founder infiltration didn't; the Breen attack on Earth didn't. Bear in mind that just because something makes common sense doesn't necessarily mean it has a place in 'Trek. While ...

Re: In the embers of the dominion war

There will also be worlds that were conquered/attacked during the Dominion War. Betazed, Earth, Benzar, and others that got hit would tend to vote for more defenses, and higher militarization. They have had a century of peace, trusting Starfleet to protect them, and believing the universe was a saf...
