Plotline

On route to Deep Space Station K-7 the Enterprise receives a priority assignment to investigate the disappearance of the USS Peregrine. Pike and an away team beam down to an ice planet where they find the Perigrine. Meanwhile the Enterprise carries on to the station. Hemmer and Uhura work to restore the ship's systems, while Pike learns that it was carrying three refugees. Investigating they discover that one was infected with Gorn eggs which have hatched. The hatchlings had burst from his body and attacked the Peregrine's crew.

Searching the ship, Pike finds that the other two refugees are the only remaining survivors. One of them, called Buckley, is also discovered to be infected with Gorn eggs and the hatchlings burst out. They attack the team, but also fight amongst themselves until only the strongest survives.

The team puts a plan together to kill the remaining hatchling using freezing temperatures. The plan succeeds, however, Hemmer is infected. He encourages Uhura to remain in Starfleet before leaving the ship to die in the cold along with the Gorn inside him.

The Enterprise returns and the crew morn Hemmer's passing. La'an takes a leave of absence to return the last refugee to her family.
