Plotline

The Enterprise receives a distress call from a shuttlecraft under attack. They destroy the attacking warship and rescue the shuttle personnel, a boy known as the "First Servant"; his father, a physician, Gamal; and Alora, a leader on Majalis, who happens to be an old flame of Captain Pike. Pike agrees to return them to Majalis. Enroute Gamal attempts to fake his son's death to prevent him from returning home, however this fails.

When they arrive at the planet, Pike is allowed to witness the ceremony where the previous First Servant is removed from a machine and his replacement is installed. Pike is horrified to find the previous occupant is dead. Alora explains that Majalis can only remain a paradise-like society if a child is sarificed. Gramal explains that their colony is against the practice and was attempting to save his child, but that it looked like a shuttle attack.

Gramal assists M'Benga to work on a treatment for his daughter and then leaves for the colony.
